“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” Matthew 7:13-14 ESV
A wide gate, an easy, broad and spacious way that many enter by and travel is our default path. In fact, we may be able to conclude that this is the way by which we all, every one of us, enter the world: we are born into sin. So we “enter” the wide gate but the narrow gate is “found”. The fact that it is “narrow” and “hard” is almost inconsequential for it is not I that have to blaze its trail so to speak nor really even I that have to walk it. Jesus has already done this (and should I so choose) on my behalf! He came down from heaven and, when no other human being could, entered through the narrow gate and walked the hard way, so that I, through Him, might be able to enter in as He imparts His righteous for my unrighteousness, His perfection for my sin. He’s done it all. All the heavy lifting is completed and so He says in all truthfulness: “Come to Me…for My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.” Matt. 11:28,30.
