Known and Knowing

“But now you do know God, and, more than that, you are known by God.”

Galatians 4:9a CJB

“So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.”

1 John 4:16 ESV

“O Lord, you have searched me and known me!”

Psalm 139:1 ESV

“I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment. I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians.”

Exodus 6:6-7 NIV

God’s purpose was not simply to free the Israelites, but to make Himself known.

How is God being glorified through your story? How is He making Himself known through your life?

John Piper writes, “Deeper than knowing God is being known by God. What defines us as Christians is not most profoundly that we have come to know Him but that He took note of us and made us His own.”

“But you, O Lord, know me; you see me, and test my heart toward you.” Jeremiah 12:3

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:27

“For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.” 1 Corinthians 13:12

It’s mind boggling to think on the fact that the God of the Universe, as Scripture says, has…examined my heart and knows everything about me.
knows when I sit down or stand up.
knows my thoughts even when I’m far away.
sees me when I travel and when I rest at home.
knows everything I do.
knows what I am going to say even before I say it.
goes before me and follows me.
places His hand of blessing on my head.

Psalm 139:1-5 NLT

I’m given dignity and my worth is proven by the fact that God sees me and declares that there is something in me that is worthy of being known. It’s as if He raises me up, to His level, looks into my eyes and invites me into an intimate two-way knowing: Him of me and me of Him. With the psalmist I am inclined to declare:“Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand!” Psalm 139:6 NLT

J.I. Packer writes in Knowing God:

“What matters supremely, therefore, is not, in the last analysis, the fact that I know God, but the larger fact which underlies it—the fact that He knows me. I am graven on the palms of His hands. I am never out of His mind. All my knowledge of Him depends on His sustained initiative in knowing me. I know Him because He first knew me, and continues to know me.”
