Leviticus chapter 18 repeats the phrase, “I am Adonai your God” or “I am Adonai” six times and chapter 19 repeats the phrases 15 times! Why such repetition? Is it to remind the people, in the midst of a long list of things to do and (mostly) not to do, Whom they ought to keep their focus on? Like, it’s not this list of religious ordinances that you need to look to but Me! I am Adonai your God; I am the great reason behind it all; this is Who I am; be holy because I am holy.
“I am Adonai your God, who has set you apart from other peoples. Therefore you are to distinguish between clean and unclean…Rather, you people are to be holy for me; because I, Adonai, am holy; and I have set you apart from the other peoples, so that you can belong to me.”
