Leviticus 17

Leviticus chapter 17 writes very soberly concerning the blood of creatures that are sacrificed. A slaughtered animal is to be brought to the tent of meeting and presented as an offering. The priest is then to splash the blood on the altar–it (the blood) is not to be eaten: “For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for yourselves; for it is the blood that makes atonement because of the life” verse 11.

So here stand the regulations of that age: atonement lies outside of the sinner it covers their sin but at a distance. Hundreds of years later, Jesus comes along and gives a radical new command: “Then Yeshua said to them, “Yes, indeed! I tell you that unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life in yourselves. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life — that is, I will raise him up on the Last Day.  For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me, and I live in him. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live through the Father, so also whoever eats me will live through me. So this is the bread that has come down from heaven — it is not like the bread the fathers ate; they’re dead, but whoever eats this bread will live forever!”  John 6:53-58 CJB

So, while the former (blood of animals) provided an outward, temporary covering, the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from the inside out. It is to be taken into our body, our very being, where the transformational power of His blood works to sanctify and make us whole and complete in Him. “On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.” John 14:20

“I am the living bread that has come down from heaven; if anyone eats this bread, he will live forever. Furthermore, the bread that I will give is my own flesh; and I will give it for the life of the world.” John 6:51

Even further back than the manna that was given to the Israelites during their desert exodus, this brings to mind the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden. “For just as in connection with Adam all die, so in connection with the Messiah all will be made alive.” 1 Corinthians 15:22 CJB
